The collection contains letters, 1840s, to Judge Baldwin from his wife Martha S. Baldwin and daughter Frances C. Baldwin Stuart concerning family matters in Staunton, Va. Letters, 1853-1882, to Stuart on a variety of political topics including secession, reconstruction, the "Negro problem" and Fillmore's cabinet. Correspondents include Charles Francis Adams, Charles W. Button, C.C. Baldwin, Joseph G. Baldwin, Robert Conrad, James H. Dooley, L.M. Powell, and George C. Whiting. Of interest is a letter from Thomas Hall to Archibald Stuart mentioning the last military expedition of George Rogers Clark, the desire of Kentucky to separate from Virginia, and local politicians Joseph Crockett and John Fowler, as well as his personal drinking problem.
